Merchant Galleon
Faction: free traders
Overview
The Merchant Galleon is the Free Traders' answer to the problem of surviving profitable routes that everyone else wants to plunder. More heavily armed than any honest merchant vessel has a right to be, it combines a genuinely cavernous cargo hold with weapons batteries capable of discouraging all but the most determined pirate assault. Its modular internal layout allows the crew to reconfigure cargo, defence, and trading module ratios between port calls, adapting to whatever the next sector's threat environment demands.

Lore
Free Traders do not believe in escort contracts when they can afford the guns themselves. The Merchant Galleon is how you tell a pirate: I have calculated the value of this cargo, and I have spent exactly enough on weapons to make robbing me unprofitable. The math always works out.
Tactics
- 1
Configure the Galleon's modular interior for maximum cargo on safe routes and maximum weapons on contested ones — the ability to reconfigure between port calls is the defining advantage no pure warship or pure hauler can match.
- 2
Run Merchant Galleons in pairs: twin Galleons covering mutual sectors effectively double the trade volume while the shared weapons deter all but the most determined pirate attacks.
- 3
Use the Missile Defence Battery to deter pursuit rather than destroy pursuers — the Galleon's speed of 44 is high for a cargo ship, and a pursuing pirate that takes a missile hit will often break off rather than eat another.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
- +1,800-unit cargo hold combined with four weapon systems makes it the only ship that can run profitable trade routes through moderately dangerous space without a dedicated escort.
- +Speed of 44 is the highest of any cargo-capable ship at Tier 3, providing genuine escape options that slower haulers completely lack.
- +Modular internal layout allows reconfiguration between port calls, adapting the weapons-to-cargo ratio to match the current route's threat environment.
Weaknesses
- −Dual Kinetic Turrets and Missile Defence Battery can deter pirates but will not survive a sustained attack from a dedicated warship — the Galleon deters, it does not fight.
- −Lower shield capacity (700) compared to dedicated combat ships means it cannot absorb volleys from military opponents even briefly.
- −High crew requirement of 65 means sustained crew costs are significant — the economic model only works when cargo runs are consistently profitable.
Recommended Modules
- armoured cargo hold
- missile defence battery upgrade
